Product details

The tenth volume of Jung's collected works contains a series of smaller writings that have not been available in a German edition for many years, some even for decades. Among them is one of the first texts in which Jung discusses the European cultural crisis as a psychological, collectively unconscious phenomenon: "On the Unconscious" from 1918. This essay opens the volume and sets the tone for all further discussions collected here. Some of these works, such as the two papers on India from 1939, have not been published in German before. Others were only accessible in older editions, such as Jung's famous and controversial essays "Wotan" and "After the Catastrophe," in which he sought to explain the phenomenon of National Socialism to the world and himself, coining the term "collective guilt." The volume also includes the long-out-of-print essay "Present and Future," first published in 1957, and - as the most extensive work - the analysis of the fear of "flying saucers," the fascination with "things seen in the sky": "A Modern Myth." All these contributions share the commonality that Jung, drawing from his medical and psychological experience, addresses contemporary phenomena that deeply concern him - and not just him. He stands as a defender of the individual against the obscuring of consciousness by the immediacy of an unconscious with which there is no conscious and deliberate engagement. He questions all models of social organization regarding how they relate to the individual, to the person as a human being. The insights one can gain from Jung regarding the often-used term "alienation" are among the great surprises of this new volume of the collected works.
