Product details
The First Letter to the Corinthians is, like few other letters of Paul, a compelling paradigm of situation- and practice-oriented theology. The various confusions and issues within the Corinthian community, particularly their enthusiasm that bypasses eschatological reservations, prompt Paul to write an unusually rich letter in terms of thematic diversity and detail, in which he seeks to bring the community back to the grounds of earthly reality and the sobriety of agape love. Because Paul addresses both written and oral reports about the Corinthian community, his letter serves as a primary source for the everyday and faith-related problems of a young missionary church amidst the syncretism of an ancient port city. It is no coincidence that the letter, which raises a multitude of issues related to the history of religions, literary criticism, epistolary writing, rhetoric, sociology, and ethics, has served in recent years as a starting point for various new questions in exegesis. The EKK commentary aims to elucidate the Corinthian position and, above all, Paul’s theological argumentation. A particular focus has been placed on the history of interpretation and its impact, whose lines are repeatedly drawn into the present to sharpen the awareness of the opportunities and risks inherent in Paul’s call for the unity of the church, the center of the gospel in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, future expectations, as well as the concrete Christian lifestyle and community building, which remain relevant to this day.
