Product details
Volume 5 of the "Collected Works" presents the revised edition from 1952 of C. G. Jung's first major publication following his encounter with Freud. In the preface to the edited fourth edition, Jung writes that "this book is a milestone" set at the point where two paths diverged. Due to its imperfection and incompleteness, it became the program for the following decades of my life. Hardly had I completed the manuscript when it dawned on me what it means to live with or without a myth. Thus, I naturally resolved to get to know "my" myth, and I regarded this as the task par excellence, for - I told myself - how could I properly account for my personal factor, my personal equation, which is so essential for understanding the other, if I was unaware of it? "Symbols of Transformation" is a classic work in schizophrenia research, the first attempt to apply Freud's discoveries and symbolic-mythical thinking to a case of psychosis. "The Miller case is a textbook example of the manifestations of the unconscious that precede a severe mental disorder... The case was convenient for me in that I had no involvement with it and could therefore refute the often-heard objection that I had influenced the patient... It was never my aim to justify my theories on the patient, as I found it more essential to understand the patient's situation in all its aspects, which naturally includes the unconscious compensation. Such a case was Miss Miller. I tried to understand her situation as best as I could, and in this study, I presented the results of my efforts as an example of the kind and extent of the issues that a doctor wishing to practice psychotherapy should be aware of.".
