The Austrian art historian Fritz Novotny is considered by Julius Meier-Graefe to be one of the most important mediators of French modernism in the German-speaking world. At the center of his work on this topic is his groundbreaking study "Cézanne and the End of Scientific Perspective," which was published in 1938 – a year politically unfavorable. Its first significant reception was initially linked to Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenologically oriented interest in Cézanne's painting.
