The Austrian art historian Fritz Novotny is considered by Julius Meier-Graefe to be one of the most important mediators of French modernism in the German-speaking world. At the center of his work on this topic is his groundbreaking study "Cézanne and the End of Scientific Perspective," which was published in 1938 – a year politically unfavorable. Its first significant reception was initially linked to Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenologically oriented interest in Cézanne's painting. This edition presents the text of the long inaccessible study in its original form, supplemented by all of Novotny's works on Paul Cézanne that were created before and after 1938. Furthermore, a detailed appendix provides insight into Novotny's estate, including his correspondence with other prominent Cézanne researchers of his generation, such as John Rewald, Adrien Chappuis, and Kurt Badt. This book is aimed at anyone interested in modern art and its development. The introduction by editor Gabriel Ramin Schor situates Novotny's work within a problem history of perspective, while the afterword by Agnes Blaha portrays the art historian through the lens of his estate.
