Product details

From the ghetto of Theresienstadt, which was established as a collection camp for Czech Jews, tens of thousands were transported to extermination camps. However, a Jewish family from Prague survives the ghetto. Jirí Lauscher is indispensable as a carpenter in the ghetto workshop, while Irma Lauscherová, a passionate teacher, secretly educates children living in the ghetto. Their daughter Michaela is eight years old at the time of liberation. Theresienstadt remains the most painful and indelible experience of their lives. Their survival becomes a commitment to keep the memory of the dead alive, but also to educate and confront the descendants of the perpetrators and beneficiaries. In the 1960s, they meet Lothar Kreyssig, the founder of the Aktion Sühnezeichen. A conversation ensues that shapes generations and should never be interrupted. This book recounts the lives of Irma Lauscherová (1904-1985) and Jirí Lauscher (1901-1989) and how they helped Germans in East and West overcome external and mental barriers, learn about Judaism, and rediscover Central Europe. Dr. Christian Staffa, Managing Director of Aktion Sühnezeichen-Friedensdienste.
