The volume presents the first systematic analysis of PEGIDA based on the existing empirical studies. Starting from its own investigations and observations, it reconstructs the development of the movement that emerged in Dresden in the fall of 2014 and garnered national and international attention. The analysis includes organizers, positions, networks, rallies, demonstrators, as well as the reactions from politics, media, and society, and integrates the findings into a comprehensive study with insights from political culture research. PEGIDA proves to be a new style of protest movement, a right-wing populist outrage movement that mobilizes xenophobic and Islam-critical sentiments while expressing fundamental reservations towards political and media elites.
