Margarete Gmeiner is a widow and seventy years old when she questions why love should only mean happiness and new beginnings for young people. An intimate friendship has developed between her and Wolfgang Burger, a former master tailor who has also been widowed for years, promising both of them a new joy in life. They demonstrate that love can bring happiness not only to the young but also to the older and elderly. For the television film 'Late Love,' director Ilse Hofmann and screenwriter Max von der Grün received the 'Wilhelmine-Lübke Prize' from the German Elderly Care Association. In his moving speech at the award ceremony titled 'Growing Old - a Punishment?' Max von der Grün speaks out against the obsession with youth in a performance-driven society: "Youth is always favored; it is pretended that there is neither old age nor death.".
