Product details

A remarkable and refreshing collection of classic anti-war literature by Croatian writer Miljenko Jergović, whose penetrating prose is reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut and Aleksandar Hemon.

Miljenko Jergović's remarkable debut collection of stories, Sarajevo Marlboro, earned him great recognition throughout Europe. In melancholic, dreamlike prose, the stories in Sarajevo Marlboro evoke Alan Lightman's Einstein's Dreams and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, yet Jergović's book is the strongest of the three. Born a Croat, Jergović spent his childhood in Sarajevo and chose to stay there for most of the war. These stories are clearly rooted in the material world, shaped by Jergović's deeply personal vision, underground humor, and a razor-sharp understanding of the fate of the young Muslims, Croats, and Serbs of the city – the minute details of their inner lives in the foreground, the death zone in the background.

As a novelist, short story writer, poet, and columnist, Miljenko Jergović is a literary phenomenon whose writing is celebrated across Europe. His poetry collection Warsaw Observatory received the Goran Prize for Young Poets and the Mak Dizdar Prize.
