Product details

Talking about speech acts usually means discussing illocutions for speech act theorists. This is somewhat strange, as the ability to have an effect through speaking is the fundamental drive behind verbal communication. One of the most interesting questions might be how speakers manage to have the effects they do through what they say. What potential for effect do utterances have? To answer this question, one must know what effects can actually be achieved. This knowledge has sedimented in the vocabulary. The large number of simple verbs like convince, persuade, or surprise used to describe acts with effects highlights the high significance of perlocutionary forces in German. This work reveals the lexical structure of the perlocutionary through the analysis of the interconnection of perlocutionary expressions, the system of cross-references in meaning specifications, and citation examples.
