Recently, representatives from the two major German churches have agreed to take joint action against church-critical television programs. The occasion is particularly uncomfortable documentary broadcasts by the publicist Ernst Klee, which have been and are being aired by Hessischer Rundfunk. Klee exposes, without any embellishment, the misconduct of the churches in connection with National Socialism: involvement in euthanasia activities and anti-Semitism, as well as organized escape assistance for Nazi leaders to Latin America after the war. The churches are portrayed with this unresolved past, leading to the destruction of the historical narrative that has been diligently and painstakingly smoothed over for decades, which depicted a unified official resistance from the churches. Cynics in higher church ranks refer to this as a new hopeful phase.
