Peter Altenberg (1859-1919) left behind not only his literary work but also an artistic oeuvre that remains largely unknown. He collected thousands of postcards and photographs, some of which he annotated and related to each other. Two exceptionally well-preserved albums by Altenberg from the Literature and Art Institute Hombroich are presented. Previously unknown letters and materials are also analyzed. Central to this are the questions: How did Altenberg become an artist? What captivated his gaze? Altenberg's idiosyncratic engagement with themes such as art, (female) beauty, or World War I reflects his unfiltered and distinctive approach to his environment. In doing so, he creates connections that provoke touching, surprising, or comedic effects. Both albums are full of artistic expression that resonates with today's viewers in its power and originality—precisely because they do not follow any contemporary trends.
