Product details

Jens Soentgen tells a story from the natural sciences - as always, knowledgeable and very entertaining. His hero is the only Scot to ever receive the Nobel Prize: Charles Thomson Rees Wilson. His great achievement was the invention of the cloud chamber, which dominated nuclear physics for half a century and led to fifteen additional Nobel Prizes. In every respect, his invention was Scottish, as Wilson used it to explore what surrounded him daily: fog and clouds. Inspired by the spectacle of clouds and light at the summit of Ben Nevis, which Wilson climbed in 1894, he began to study cloud formation in self-blown glass vessels: as the condensation of water vapor on tiny dust particles. He researched with endless patience and - true to his Scottish nature - at minimal cost, until he discovered that even in pure air without particles, the finest contrails were formed. What had previously only been calculable became visible to the naked eye: traces of the decay products of atomic nuclei, the smallest components of matter. Vitali Konstantinov humorously accompanies the narrative with illustrations that are more than just the icing on the cake of this bibliophile volume.
