He honored science and culture, art and beauty, despised barbarism, and saw love as the driving force and goal of evolution. Hermann Schulz and Lutz Kliche, who accompanied Cardenal for decades—as publisher, translator, and friends—have compiled a selection of his most beautiful texts. Accompanied by many previously unpublished photos, they trace the chronology of an extraordinary life, from youth through his time in the Trappist monastery and the years on Solentiname to the revolution and post-revolution. Additionally, the volume gathers voices of notable personalities connected to Cardenal, including Heinrich Böll, Dorothee Sölle, Dietmar Schönherr, Johann Baptist Metz, and Willy Brandt. Particularly touching are the very personal memories of the two editors about their experiences with Ernesto Cardenal over many shared years.
