In public, women as criminals receive little attention. When a crime is mentioned, most people assume that the perpetrator is male. This notion is not surprising, as women indeed play a subordinate role in crime. However, has the proportion of female offenders always been lower than that of male offenders? Has female criminality increased in recent years? Have women become more violent? These are some of the questions that will be discussed in this paper. A retrospective will illustrate the development of overall female crime from 1902 to 2002 and analyze its structure based on several specific offenses.
