Product details
This work presents the representation of the nude in New Objectivity comprehensively for the first time and analyzes ten central motif groups using formal-iconographic methods as well as cultural-historical questions: lust murder, prostitution, the tattooed body, homosexuality, and sports emerge as innovative, scandalous themes that characterize the New Objectivity nude in the first half of the 1920s. The second half of the decade is reserved for more traditional subjects such as painter and model, nude in the studio, self-portrait, bathing and toilet scenes, vanitas allegory, and the reclining nude. However, even in the contemporary nude themes, the artists examined do not illustrate the circumstances of the Weimar Republic but rather engage with their own artistic position within modernity.
