In this book, the author describes the existential and educational struggles in the Viennese suburbs during the long 19th century up to the end of World War I. Against the backdrop of these living conditions, he subsequently presents the social and charitable attempts made by individuals, Catholic religious communities, organizations, the Protestant Church, and the Jewish community during this time to improve education and prosperity. The book offers an interesting insight into the state of social medicine in the mentioned period and also attempts a comprehensive overview that transcends religion and politics.
