Product details
Around the year 1000, the Benedictine Notker at the Swiss monastery of St. Gall dared to do what no one had attempted before: he translated Aristotle's Categories into his mother tongue and explained them. The result was a mixture of Old High German and Latin prose. The teacher presented a whole series of these adaptations, including the Hermeneutics of Aristotle. The basis for his Categories was the Latin translation and commentary by Boethius. This work analyzes for the first time how Notker approached his translation and how he utilized the commentary. The Notker text (Chapters 1-17) is printed according to a layered model that visualizes the three levels (Aristotle/Boethius/Notker) through different fonts. A translation into Modern High German is intended to enhance understanding.
