The sermons of Augustine, despite their undoubtedly outstanding significance for understanding his time and thought, remain largely in the shadows in the German-speaking world. In particular, translations and commentaries are lacking, which are presented here for the first time for Sermons 1-5 on the Book of Genesis. The Latin text printed en face reflects the foundational edition by the Mauriners, with critical comparison to later editions and indication of deviations. The introductions and notes explain what is necessary for the classification and understanding of the texts: authenticity, transmission, chronology, textual criticism, structure, style, historical data, theology, and liturgy. A special emphasis is placed on demonstrating the biblical ideas.
