Product details

Photography and modern dance are cultural, aesthetic phenomena that undergo significant changes at the beginning of the 20th century, each developing its own language of form. Dance photography becomes an interface between the two artistic expressions, defined by two opposing principles: the surface-oriented nature of photography and the dance constituted by space and time. Photographers Charlotte Rudolph, Suse Byk, and Lotte Jacobi each focus their cameras on different forms of dance. In addition to the comparable structural approaches of the photographer and the dancer, the inherent indexical sign structure of each medium is examined. Finally, the question is addressed to what extent the captured and thus stationary dance in the medium of dance photography experiences a recurring revitalization.
