Product details

Modern information and communication technologies today open up a diverse range of possibilities for information retrieval. Users of these new technologies are digitally connected, operating globally and on the move. The technological centerpiece is the Internet, which has advanced to a mass medium for connected communication within a decade. However, where there is light, there is also shadow: Internet users navigate through an information jungle that contains both data waste and valuable knowledge. To address users' frustrations in their search for information, educational portals have established themselves as specific guides on the web. They capture visitors' attention and have a decisive influence on how accessible certain content is. However, it is still insufficiently understood how usage is distributed among different user groups and to what extent users are satisfied with the offerings and their presentation. A large-scale study conducted by Humboldt University Berlin has scientifically investigated this question. The results documented in this volume make an important contribution to the discourse on the further development and improvement of the quality of educational portals.
