Product details

The genre of preaching literature holds central importance in the 16th and 17th centuries, as printed sermons constitute a significant part of early modern writings. The work presented here examines texts that are rooted in the tradition of Lutheran exegesis, selecting sermons from this area that focus on the interpretation of plants and their properties. These plant sermons can be considered as post-Reformation testimony and part of the theological intellectual history of the time, both due to their number and their specific form of conveying evangelical doctrine. They illustrate how natural science and biblical exegesis were interconnected in the mid-16th century, and how this led to a renewed interest in allegorical interpretations of nature within Protestant-Lutheran devotional literature, before losing significance during the Enlightenment.
