From an imagological perspective and through the category of the foreign, this book explores selected representations of Russia in German literature between 1900 and 1945. Detailed text analyses reveal a fixed inventory of motifs and relatively stable schemas according to which the imaginary space of 'Russia' condenses into images. It becomes evident that the constitutive features of the representation of Russia (such as 'barbarism', 'Asianism', grandeur, potency, naturalness, religiosity) are not significantly affected by historical developments. Nevertheless, due to the flexible contextualization and semanticization of the stable characteristics of Russia, a great variety of meaning projections and interpretative possibilities is achieved.
