Product details

The author analyzes the demythologizing gesture of Elfriede Jelinek, which aims to question the innocence of things and to return the stolen history to the myths constructed by literary, media, philosophical, and societal discourses. Following the presentation of several myth theories, with particular emphasis on Roland Barthes' semiological theory, the analysis of selected prose texts by Jelinek is conducted. Eight myths or mythical complexes have been identified: family, woman, man, love, sex, nature, homeland, and music. In Jelinek's view, the mythically shaped ideas present in the collective consciousness appear as constructs of a politically ideological nature, behind which power, greed, and violence lurk. Throughout the analysis, attention is consistently drawn to the linguistic critique that accompanies Jelinek's fight against mythologemes.
