Are giving and gifting always reciprocal actions, or is there an ideal of the gift, and what does it consist of? This work presents a literature study that explores both classical and contemporary discourse on giving and gifting, incorporating historical, sociological, philosophical, and ethnological/anthropological literature. Giving and gifting are subject to values and norms that are internalized by individuals through socialization and education. To make the norms of giving and gifting visible, a qualitative content analysis is conducted on the educational and curriculum guidelines applicable in Austria for early childhood education institutions, as well as for kindergartens and primary schools - including general education and religious education. For all types of secondary schools, the curricula for religious education are examined. The result: The concept of the gift is institutionally grounded and is conveyed through education.
