When Valentin Weigel died in Zschopau in 1588, he left behind a substantial handwritten body of work consisting of treatises, sermons, and dialogues, which he had only made accessible to a small circle of friends and acquaintances during his lifetime. All of his writings have an instructive orientation; this observation sheds light on the pastoral figure of Weigel. The present work has pursued his concerns in the manner possible given the existing transmission situation, namely by considering the historical and church-political circumstances and by analyzing central writings. The former clarifies the conditions under which such a radically introverted form of faith, as represented by Weigel, could emerge; the latter reveals Weigel's strategies for finding secure orientation and passing it on to others in precarious life situations.
