Product details

The Song of Songs commentary by Bruno of Segni is largely situated within the patristic tradition, which was conveyed to his contemporary Gregory VII by Bede and, above all, by Haimo of Auxerre. Bruno's commentary on the Song of Songs is consistently oriented towards salvation history, ecclesiology, and pastoral care. It begins with an interpretation of the concluding section of the Proverbs of Solomon, the "Praise of the Virtuous Woman," which is interpreted here, like the bride of the Song of Songs, as a (pre)figure of the Church. Bruno's text is concise and pointed, and it comes across as highly vivid; his ecclesiastical and pastoral theological concerns are unmistakable. Formally, the commentary presents a prosimetrum: the prose text is interspersed with poems of both didactic and lyrical character. The introduction to this study contains historical and hermeneutical information as well as discussions on the exegetical and stylistic peculiarities of the text. A German translation is provided synoptically alongside the Latin text. The accompanying comments reference comparative passages and explain the exegetical approach. The synoptic translation and explanations open access to a broader readership.
