This book focuses on empirically derived material. It examines the relationship between the patient as a creative agent and the emerging object. The primary emphasis is on how fostering the relationship between the artist and the produced work represents a central activity within therapy. The strength of the work lies in its basis in clinical practice and its focus on patient experiences. Using standardized and recognized interview methods from qualitative research and their evaluation, a model of art therapy is developed. The significantly new contribution is the model of the therapeutic process and the insight that patients must form a bond with the artwork itself in order to recognize the relevance of art therapy and achieve positive therapeutic outcomes.
