From a cultural studies perspective, Uwe Timm's "Morenga" examines how the author attempts to influence cultural knowledge about colonial history as well as self and other images. The study conducts a comprehensive contextual analysis to reveal how Timm reinterprets history in fiction and guides the readership towards a critical view of Germany's colonial past. Almost incidentally, "Morenga" revitalizes the genre of the historical novel. Furthermore, the study investigates the role that concepts of otherness and identity play in the discourse of colonial power. As demonstrated, Timm anticipates postcolonial theories and explores the possibilities and limitations of understanding the other through the character Gottschalk.
