Product details

At the external borders of the European Union, thousands of irregular migrants die each year. The EU border regime protects the exclusivity of European territory. Why is this considered so normal? This book traces the historical development of territorial statehood and examines the media, cartographic, and social science discourses through which territorial state thinking is reproduced and normalized. It further analyzes how the principle of territoriality is currently being transferred to the European level. On one hand, Europe is established as a normal political-territorial unit through an institutional and discursive construction process and is delineated from the outside. On the other hand, the borders of Europe remain ambiguous and unclear; the emerging territoriality of Europe exhibits postmodern characteristics.
