Paul Rameder addresses the question of how and in what areas volunteer work contributes to the genesis and reproduction of social inequalities. The aura of voluntariness and selflessness allows the socially detrimental effects of volunteer work to escape public perception and explicit criticism. Multivariate analyses of micro-census data from Austria show that access to volunteer work is largely shaped by the resource endowment of individuals. Additionally, the distribution of functions within volunteer work reproduces unequal social power relations. Thus, the mechanisms of social closure and hierarchization also contribute to the entrenchment of societal inequalities in the realm of volunteer work.
