Patients with acquired brain injury often experience difficulties in everyday communication when it comes to conveying emotions. These issues affect not only the productive but also the receptive side of emotional communication. This study examines the extent to which linguistic-emotional and non-emotional information at the word, sentence, and text levels, as well as emotional prosody and facial expressions, are processed by these patients. Particular attention is given to any potential valence specificity of the two cerebral hemispheres in the processing of emotional information. Emotional aspects and aspects of language processing are compared at the various levels of analysis, and performance dissociations that arise are discussed based on neuroanatomical and neuropsychological data.
