The Chan monasteries of the Song and Yuan dynasties were highly hierarchical in their organization, as indicated by the monastic rules. It is still claimed today that the organizational structure resembled that of the imperial court. This work seeks to uncover the original administrative model based on the monastic rules of the Chixiu Baizhang qinggui. To achieve this, the entire fourth book of the Chixiu Baizhang qinggui had to be analyzed, and it is now presented for the first time in translation. The detailed philological comments make this work a valuable contribution to the study of the monastery organization of Chan communities.
