Product details

Things move the world of early modern prose novels. They are exchanged, given away, lost, and found. In Melusine, a table with the entire family history is discovered; Fortuna gifts Fortunatus a purse of luck in the eponymous novel; in the beautiful Magelona, rings are used to authenticate noble lineage; and in Gabriotto and Reinhart, roses serve as a secret sign of love. When these elements are incorporated into the reading and analysis of early prose novels, it becomes clear that their structure is by no means simple or solely determined by the ending, as is often claimed, but rather that these early novels operate with a different system of coherence than that which we are familiar with from the highly artificial courtly romances of the high medieval flowering or from modern novels. In engaging with Melusine, Fortunatus, the beautiful Magelona, and Gabriotto and Reinhart, it becomes evident that each of these novels uniquely utilizes objects to connect various narrative worlds and establish coherence.
