In 1910, the largest exhibition of Islamic art of all time took place at the Theresienhöhe in Munich. Around 3,600 exhibits from international collections and museums were showcased as masterpieces of Mohammedan art. Many of these works are still considered incunabula of Islamic art today. The exhibition marked a significant turning point for the modern scientific, as well as popular and artistic reception of this art in the West. This book presents the first comprehensive monographic study of the Munich exhibition. However, it does not limit itself to reconstructing the event from contemporary textual and visual sources; it also provides a well-founded contextualization within broader cultural and, above all, historical scientific contexts that highlight the significance of the novel modes of presentation and reception from Munich 1910. Thus, this book illuminates not only the individual event but also essential milestones of an intercultural history of expertise, science, and culture, which today faces a more critical self-assessment than ever before.
