The aim of primary foreign language teaching is to develop openness towards other languages and cultures in younger foreign language learners, as well as to contribute to the expansion of their linguistic and communicative competencies, in order to make them confident European citizens. The book outlines ways to achieve this goal through the use of legends and fairy tales from Europe. It first presents the intercultural and linguistic potential of fairy tales and legends and provides didactic suggestions for working with these stories in foreign language teaching. Subsequently, it introduces teaching activities with accompanying materials based on one story each in German, English, and French. Finally, it reports on a trial of the materials presented in the book, which resulted from a Comenius 2.1 project funded by the EU Commission.
