Product details

What functions do small words like discourse markers and sound elements have in interaction? Where and for what purpose do young women use them in conversations with each other? The empirical study examines these genuinely oral phenomena using a corpus of everyday conversations among Swiss-German high school students. As minimally referential objects, they appear in conversationally unclear positions and fluctuate in their status between sound, formula, and grammaticalized element. The detailed micro-analytical investigation demonstrates how, in combination with interactional and discursive methods, a sense of togetherness can be enhanced and intentionally created in interaction. The work is theoretically situated in sociolinguistics and methodologically in conversation analysis and interactional linguistics, connecting to interactional research directions as well as international youth language research, and it reveals new avenues for dialectological inquiries.
