This volume primarily focuses on the historical and contemporary place of children's and youth literature (CJL) in cultural memory, particularly examining aspects of identity formation, transmission, and tradition-building. The essays in this volume highlight different dimensions of the symbol and action system of CJL: the child or young reader, the author, the text, as well as aspects of literature policy and the more or less institutionalized literary mediation. They consider both victim and perpetrator perspectives; the national reference framework includes not only Austria and Germany but also the Netherlands, Belgium, and the USA.
