Product details
Chiliasm, situated between eschatology and social utopia, between early Christian faith and revolutionary upheavals, accompanies the entire work of Anna Seghers, including her novels "The Decision" and "The Trust." They depict the construction of the GDR as the fulfillment of a secularized expectation of salvation, filled with biblical imagery and quotes from Luther, as shown by text analysis and a look into manuscript variants. Against the political and historical backdrop of the 1950s, it is illustrated how the fractures between communist utopia and real socialism become increasingly apparent. Contrary to previous claims, Seghers' novels of construction express criticism of the prevailing conditions and ultimately disappointment: encoded, anxious, restrained. What remains of the political dream is the literary image of a chiliastic utopia, whose realization failed in the 20th century.
