The topic of entrepreneurship among migrants has received little attention in Switzerland so far. Migrants have primarily been studied in the context of post-war guest worker migration and asylum immigration, with little assumption of potential entrepreneurs within these groups. This work examines this previously overlooked migrant group. For this purpose, the author interviewed Italian, Turkish, Serbian, and Sri Lankan men and women from the first and second generations across various sectors such as bookstores, kiosks, take-away, travel agencies, cosmetics, martial arts, and more. Through network comparisons and biographical case studies, it is illustrated what motives drive migrants—both those with foreign passports and naturalized citizens—to pursue self-employment, what difficulties they must overcome along the way, and what assistance they can seek from whom to achieve their entrepreneurial goals.
