For over twenty years, intercultural learning has received significant attention from the fields of pedagogy, foreign language didactics, and many other disciplines. The theoretical development is highly differentiated; at the same time, it is evident that some models for implementing intercultural communicative competencies (ICC) fall far short of their comprehensive theoretical claims. The book first discusses the discrepancy between the ideals and the reality of intercultural learning in foreign language teaching, and then introduces drama pedagogy as a method for fully realizing the intercultural aspect in foreign language instruction. After a thorough analysis of the potential of drama pedagogy for intercultural learning, the author outlines the demands that an intercultural drama pedagogy must meet. The analysis of an interculturally-focused drama pedagogy teaching project and the presentation of numerous dramatic exercises in the appendix provide teachers with practical advice for implementing intercultural drama pedagogy in their foreign language classes.
