On one hand, Alfred Döblin was not part of the group of authors who experienced exile as a path of no return or even as an opportunity. On the other hand, he also does not belong to those writers who fell completely silent in exile. Due to his significance for the literary era of exile, a detailed examination of this author's positions and works in exile is rich in perspectives. Döblin's works are discussed in the context of the themes, genres, projects, political orientations, and cultural tendencies of the entire exile, situating his activities within the debates and other activities of exiles. The volume documents the 20th International Alfred Döblin Colloquium, which took place in Zurich in 2015 on the theme of exile as a journey of fate: Alfred Döblin and literary exile 1933-1950.
