Product details

The biblical narrative of Jephthah (Judges 10:6-12:7), in which he offers his only daughter as a burnt offering due to a vow, has always been considered highly offensive in terms of its theme. However, the internal logic of the story is often deemed incomprehensible: Jephthah seems to negotiate with the opposing Ammonite king as if he were dealing with the Moabites. This book demonstrates that the Jephthah narrative reenacts Numbers 20-22. Only those who recognize the inner-biblical dialogue between the Torah and the Jephthah narrative will understand why Jephthah argues with the Ammonites using Moab as a reference. The intertextual connection also makes it clear that Jephthah's daughter is a symbol of Israel. The human sacrifice symbolizes Israel's downfall, which is caused by its leadership.
