Karol Rathaus (born 1895 in Tarnopol, died 1954 in New York), a student of Franz Schreker in Vienna and Berlin, was a well-known composer of symphonic music, chamber music, theatrical scores, and film music in the early 1930s. Rathaus was among those whose careers were abruptly interrupted by the Nazis. In his new home, the USA, Rathaus transformed from an ambitious composer into a composing educator. His artistic work from the pre-war period initially remained forgotten and is only gradually becoming known today. This book is the first comprehensive presentation of the composer’s biography and works. It is not only a multifaceted contribution to exile and emigration research but also contains numerous documents from well-known contemporaries in literature, film, and theater arts in Europe and the USA, grounded in Rathaus's extraordinarily versatile oeuvre.
