Product details
This book addresses the tragic phenomenon of infanticide, presented and analyzed through the lens of legal norms, but primarily through the lens of everyday legal practice. Based on nearly 800 criminal cases that were conducted in Inner Austria between 1787 and 1849, the study provides detailed insights into the profiles of the female infanticides, their fears and needs, as well as their social and economic environments. Step by step, the shocking backgrounds of the crimes are revealed, offering deep insights into areas of women's and body history that are otherwise difficult to access. The defense strategies of the accused are discussed, as well as the role of forensic medicine, the practice of sentencing, and the question of the acceptance and prevalence of this crime. A review of contemporary regional proposals aimed at preventing infanticide rounds off the presentation.
