This contrastive segmental phonetics of the standard pronunciation of German and the Brazilian variety of Portuguese represents a contribution to teaching German as a foreign language for learners whose first language is Brazilian Portuguese. Since the two major varieties of Portuguese differ significantly in phonetics, a contrastivity specifically oriented towards the pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese is fundamental. First, the two sound systems of German and Brazilian Portuguese are compared to identify interferences and other phonetic challenges. These are then addressed with detailed articulatory guidance.
