Product details

The cultural policy of Kaiser Wilhelm II has primarily been viewed as a personal matter. However, an investigation into the goals and motives behind his cultural policy has largely been lacking. The last German emperor intended much more with the promotion of culture than merely indulging personal preferences. This is convincingly demonstrated by the analysis of the opera "Der Roland von Berlin," written at his behest. The position of the monarchy and the Hohenzollern dynasty was threatened by various developments within the empire. Therefore, Kaiser Wilhelm II had to take action. His political attempts at a social empire failed, and his options were limited by the constitution. The emperor could only act more freely in the realm of culture. Since 1894, there has been a noticeable increase in cultural political activities. Kaiser Wilhelm II aimed to make his grandfather, Kaiser Wilhelm I, the centerpiece of an imperial myth, resulting in an imperial cult. This was to be emotionally anchored in the people through cultural measures such as operas, plays, and folk songs. The Hohenzollern dynasty was to be integrated into the national identity of the Germans, which had been increasingly defined since 1871. The work analyzes various operas, plays, festivals, and folk songs in terms of content and connects their themes with the political events in the empire.
