What do German teenagers think about the target cultures of their English classes: Great Britain and the USA? In 2008, over 500 high school students from North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony participated in a standardized written group survey on this topic. The study examined the country images of students from different age groups (grades 5, 8, and 11) as well as the change in attitudes resulting from a stay abroad. The findings are contextualized within the interplay of human development, socialization, media usage, foreign language education, and the historical development of German perceptions of Great Britain and the USA. The interpretation is approached from psychological, educational, subject-specific didactic, and cultural studies perspectives.
