Based on several household surveys and a wealth of statistical information, the relationship between political objectives, economic development, and ethnic diversity is analyzed and examined from various perspectives. In addition to general questions regarding growth processes, development strategies, and income distribution, the focus is on why the Asian crisis in Indonesia led to riots, unrest, and ultimately a change of government, while neighboring Malaysia was spared from these consequences.
