Stereotypes, as generalized perceptions captured in words or images, play an important role in the relationships between national societies and social groups. In this volume, 18 German and Slovak historians, ethnologists, Slavic scholars, linguists, and art historians present empirical case studies on historical stereotype research. The themes addressed include the development and staging of stereotypes in various historical and social contexts, including historiography, everyday life, the justification of social policy, border conflicts, the Cold War, the construction of national self-images (for example, architecture as an auto-stereotype), representations of Jews, and finally, the mutual stereotype relationships between Germans and Slovaks.
