Bern and new music? Aside from the recent developments in the Bernese music scene, the promotion of contemporary sounds is not considered one of the city's standout features. This is the general perception, at least. However, a look into the archives reveals that this is a misconception. As early as the 1920s, a local group of the IGNM was formed in Bern. After 1940, it was the private Gattiker house concerts for contemporary music that established themselves as an attractive forum for young and emerging chamber music. Swiss composers like Heinz Holliger and Jürg Wyttenbach presented their first works here, and figures such as Giacinto Scelsi, Luigi Dallapiccola, and Ernst Krenek were also drawn into the sandstone walls. For the first time, the author traces the fascinating history of this concert series and illuminates its significance against the backdrop of local concert history, national contemporary music creation, and broader musical aesthetic and historical developments around the mid-20th century.
